Finalist Announced for 2018 Watkins Award


The National Alliance of African American   Athletes announced the finalist for the 27th   annual Franklin D. Watkins Award.

The four finalists in alphabetical order are :

  Mataeo Durant, Plum Branch, SC; student-athlete: McCormick High School, McCormick, SC - 4.8 GPA:   Honors Student for 4 years, Student Athlete of the Year, National Honor Society inductee, Hardy Foundation recipient, South Carolina Regional Player of the Year, and 3 Time South Carolina All State player. Was a member of National Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Palmetto All Star team, All Lakeland team, Augusta Chronicle All Area team, South Carolina Shrine Bowl All Star team, Blue Grey Classic All Star team, and Georgia-South Carolina Border All Star team.

   Quincy Patterson, Chicago, IL, Eric Solorio Academy – 4.7 GPA:  All-Academic Team for 3 years, made the Presidential Honor Roll for 4 years, volunteer for mentally disabled, mentor to young quarterbacks in Chicago Area, volunteer for Winter Shovel Service for the elderly, mentor and tutor to Chicago Elementary School students, player on the following teams: Texas Blue Grey Bowl All Star, New Orleans ODA All Star, Chicago All City, Illinois MVP, Elite 11, and National Elite 11 Quarterback.

  Nick Petit-FrereTampa, FL, Berkeley Preparatory School – 3.8 GPA:  He made the Berkeley Head Master List and Berkeley Deans List for 3 years. He earned the EC Smith Award for Volunteerism. Nick also was a National Honor Society inductee, US Army National Scholar Athlete Award recipient, Berkeley Student Body President, Volunteer for local retirement homes, for the neighborhood food drive, and for painting low- income schools in Boston, Youth Mentor and Tutor, Hillsborough County First Team All-American for 2 years, #1 Player Spectrum Sports, First Team Big Country Preps, Top 100 Tampa Bay Area Football player of the Year, MaxPreps All-American, MaxPreps All-State, USA Today All American, First Team All State,  and Under Armour Football All American.

  Shayne Simon,West Orange NJ, Saint Peters Prep High School – 4.0 GPA:  National Honors Society inductee, Joi’s Angels Homeless Shelter volunteer, National Spanish Honors Society member, Jersey City Boys Club Youth Mentor, Saint Ann’s volunteer for the elderly,  Perk Homeless Shelter volunteer, Hudson Reporter Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-Area player, First Team All-New Jersey player, Butkus Award Finalist, New Jersey Super Football Conference First Team player, New Jersey First Team All-State player and New Jersey First Team All American.

 "This year’s 2018 Watkins Award features an incredible collection of fine student athletes," Everette Pearsall, Executive Director of The Alliance, shares.  “Each of these young men is well equipped for success academically. We have continued to recognize and honor the premier African American Scholar Athletes in the United States.”

 Finalists are chosen based on their unweighted grade point average, their personal statements, extracurricular activities, community service, and letters of recommendation. Each winner will be recognized in the Washington, DC, area and each will receive an award, ring, and dinner in his hometown.
