NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Contact: Reginald Grant (323) 376-1057 Press Contact: Tonie Washington (310) 365-5258 Los Angeles Chapter of the National Alliance of African American Athletes Now Accepting Nominations for 2007 Los Angeles African American Male High School Scholar Athletes Los Angeles, CA (December 27, 2006) – Los Angeles Chapter of The National Alliance of African American Athletes (The Alliance) will recognize and award a stellar group of high school male scholar athletes for their academic achievements and community service from the Los Angeles area at The Alliance Annual Teen Summit on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. This event will be held at the Le Meriden Hotel located in Beverly Hills, California. This presentation is a part of local and nationwide effort to recognize and help African American males achieve academic success. The mission of The Alliance is to empower African American males through athletics, education and public programs. The Alliance uses sports to motivate and promote scholastic achievement. “This year The Alliance’s Los Angeles Chapter will recognize the achievements of local high school male scholar athletes. These young men are being awarded for beating the odds,” said Reginald Grant, National Chairman of the Board for the Alliance. We are now accepting nominations applications for 2007 Los Angeles African American Male High School Scholar Athlete. All applications must be receive no later than Friday, January 12, 2007 (no exceptions). Nominees must also submit a 200 words essay, official transcripts and letters of recommendations. Awardees will also be acknowledged at the 2007 Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Awards black-tie affair. The Watkins Award is the most prestigious award given annually to the top African American male high school scholar-athletes in the country. The Watkins Award alumni includes Robert Tate of Arizona Cardinals, Darnell Dinkins of the Cleveland Browns, LaVarr Arrington of the New York Giants, Shane Battier of Memphis Grizzlies, Ronald Curry and Grant Irons of the Oakland Raiders, Lorenzo Alexander of the Washington Redskins, Deryck Toles of the Indianapolis Colts, Ted Ginn Jr. of Ohio State and Justin Blalock of University of Texas.
